Menus are used for people to be able to navigate around a website. There a couple places on your site where we can create and edit Menus. First you need to login to your WordPress Dashboard. In the the left hand sidebar menu hover your cursor over “Appearance” then click on “Menu” in the flyout.
This is the “Menu Management Panel”. There additional options but they are not currently showing by default. If you take your cursor and click on “Screen Options” at the top you will see these options. Lets click all of them but “Format” and “Link Relationship”. Each one of the items we checked will now show up down below. Depending on your theme, there may be additional items added as well.
We need to name our Menu, so I am going to name mine “Primary”. Then when we click the “Create Menu” button, the grayed out area will now be visible and additional items have been added.
If you check off “Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu” every-time you create and add a page it will be added to your main menu. To have more control over your menu items, it’s a good idea to leave this one unchecked.
I will check off “Top Menu” because I want it to be my main menu. Along with the “Social Links Menu” as well. The pages I will use for the Top Menu will be Home, About, Contact, Services and Blog. If you want more pages or do not see something you are looking for just click the “View All” tab. You can also use the search option as well.
Next, click the “Add to Menu” button. That will add the pages you selected under the structure section. Here you can move around the pages in the order you want them. “Sub Menus” can easily be created by dragging them under another Menu Item.
If you click on a “Page Menu Item” there is a drop-down where you can change the navigation label. You can add a “Title Attribute” which is basically a tooltip. When you hover your cursor over it, the “Title Attribute” you added will pop up.
If you check off the “Open link in a new tab” the link will open the page in a new tab, which if often a good idea. I know I prefer to use it. There is also an option to add CSS classes for styling, and a “Description” can be added, but will only show up if your theme supports it.
There is a “Move” if you want to move this particular page in a different order in your Menu. I prefer just to use the drag feature to move the “Page Menu Items” around. Finally, there is a link to remove this “Page Menu Item” or “Cancel” your settings.
Then below “Pages” we have “Posts” which can be added to a Menu. They have all the same features as pages. The same applies to adding “Categories” and “Tags”. Again, they were added when I checked off these features under the “Screen Options” tab. Then make sure you click the “Save Menu” button.
Now if you take your cursor and hover it over the little house that has the name of your site next to it. Then right click on “Visit Site” and click on “Open link in new tab”. Or the second way you can add and edit Menus along with viewing the changes is by clicking the “Manage with live Preview” button at the top of the page.
The “Customizer” allows you to add and edit Menus just like the “Menu Management Panel” but its set up a little different. The biggest difference is it allows you to add and edit your menus in “Real Time”. You are able to see your changes as you edit them.
You can see the “Menu” that I just created. The look of your Menus will depend on your theme. If I hover my cursor over the blog page text you can see the “Title Attribute” pop up. Also, under the “Home Page” you can see the “Services” page that I added as a sub or child page.
I can click the little pencil next to “Blog”, then click the “Edit Menu” text link to edit the menu OR I can click “Primary” under “Menus”, then under “Menu Locations” I can click “View all Locations” then the “Edit Menu” text link. So, as you can see, there are several ways to access the “Customizer”to add and edit Menus.
How you choose to access the Customizer is up to you. Now if you watch the Menu on the right, I am going to move the “Contact” page and make it a sub page to the “About” page. When I hover my cursor over the “About” page. You can see the changes. The “Contact” page is now a sub/child page to the “About” page.
You can also change your sites title and tagline from the Customizer. When you are all finished, make sure you click the “Publish” button.
If we go back inside the Dashboard, there is another way you can access the “Customizer”. That is from the left side panel under “Appearance” then click “Customize”.
