Gutenberg: How to add your first WordPress Block | CoBlocks Tutorial

Get CoBlocks, a page builder for Gutenberg:

This Gutenberg tutorial shows you how to create your first WordPress block with the new Gutenberg editor. First up, head to Posts → Add New, and you’ll see a blank page.

You can add your first text block by starting to type, or add new blocks by hovering where you want the block to go and clicking the + icon, or clicking the plus icon at the top left of the page.

Adding a block brings up the “block picker”, where you can choose the different blocks. You’ll see commonly used blocks at the top, and can expand the different categories to access additional WordPress blocks. You’ll find CoBlocks’ blocks, for example, by clicking CoBlocks.

Trying adding a block! The Cover block is a good one to start with: it lets you an image with text overlayed. Add the block, add your image and text, and you’ll get something like this:

You can edit your block by opening the block menu. You get to this by clicking the gears on the top right, selecting Block, and then clicking on your Cover block. You’ll be able to choose a different overlay colour, the opacity, and whether the background stays fixed when you scroll. Your changes will be updated immediately, and you’ll be able to see these on the block.

This is your first experience of Gutenberg as a “what you see if what you get” editor, where the results you see on the Editor are exactly the same as what you see on the front-end of your site. Try this out! You can click Preview to see what the published page will look like: this should be the same as what you see on the Editor (if it’s not, try switching to one of the themes recommended at the top of this post).
