WordPress Image Optimization For Multilingual Websites

Learn how to optimize images on your multilingual WordPress website using the Compress JPEG & PNG images plugin and WPML in less than 5 minutes!

If you have a website that has many images you should consider optimizing them. And by optimizing we mean to reduce the size of the images. This directly contributes to reducing the page loading time, improving your user experience and your SEO score.

In this short tutorial, I will show you how to translate and optimize images on your multilingual WordPress website using the Compress JPEG & PNG images plugin and WPML.

So, let’s jump to the WordPress admin area!

🔹Installing, activating and configuring Compress JPEG & PNG images
Of course, you need to have the WPML core plugins installed and activated. To install the Compress JPEG & PNG images plugin, click the Add new button then type in the plugin name in the search box. Now, click the install button then activate. Click the link in the admin notice to register a new account. Simply, fill in your name and your email and click the Register account button. You will receive an email to activate your account. Once your account is activated your API key will be automatically added here. I already have an account so I will paste in the API key and save.

It is worth mentioning that the free plan allows you to compress 500 images per month.

For new image uploads, you get three compression options:
1- Compress images in the background which is the recommended option.
2- Compress images during the upload.
3- Compress images manually.

I will go with the recommended option here.

You also get to choose the image sizes that you wish to be compressed. I will choose to compress the original image along with the thumbnail, medium, and large versions.

Here, you have options related to the original image. Let’s keep the defaults here. Once done, don’t forget to save the changes.

In my media library, I have a few images. You can compress the images selecting the list view and then clicking the compress button. As you can see here it shows that it is compressing 4 sizes which corresponds to the sizes that we selected earlier. The compression process is completed.Click the details link here to find more information about the different compressed sizes of the image.

You can compress multiple images by navigating to Media ► Bulk Optimization. On this screen, you can see some image compression statistics such as the number of images that you have in your library, the number of images that haven’t been compresses yet, and the total reduction in size for your images. To optimize all the existing images that you have in your library, click the Start Bulk Optimization button. The optimization time varies based on the number of images you are optimizing and the sizes you choose to optimize.

As you can see the progress bar here shows that all the images on our website are optimized now.

🔹Translating images using WPML and optimizing them
WPML allows you to translate images metadata which are the title, caption, alt text, and description.

You can translate the metadata for any of your images by navigating to WPML ► Media Translation. There, click the pencil icon under the language you want to translate your image into. If you want to use a different image for your translation, simply click on use a different file and select the image that you want to upload. Now, fill in the translation and save the media translation.

As we have selected to compress the newly uploaded images in the background, the Compress JPEG & PNG images plugin will automatically optimize the image that we just uploaded as a translation. Let’s go to Media ► Library, choose the secondary language on our website using the admin bar language switcher. As you can see that the image is optimized!

With that, we learned how to optimize and translate images on a multilingual WordPress website.
