Coming later this year is a new publishing platform called “Newspack”, developed jointly by Google and WordPress, to help make it easier to publish local news.

Google has just announced that they’re investing $1.2M into creating a new tool called “Newspack”, to help make publishing local news easier. They’re working with Automattic/WordPress to develop the product, which is due to come out later this year.
It’s not clear how exactly it will be built, but they say that it will be compatible with “all the plugins created by the WordPress developer community”, and seems it may be a saas solution similar to [WordPress.com]( where it’s hosted by them and you pay a monthly fee to use it.
Google’s press release tells us: “the core product is not trying to be all things to all publishers. It is trying to help small publishers succeed by building best practices into the product while removing distractions that may divert scarce resources. We like to call it “an opinionated CMS:” it knows the right thing to do, even when you don’t.”
Development will begin on the project in the coming weeks, and they hope to have it available later this year. We’ll certainly keep you posted as we hear more about it.
